Dog Ear Cleaner

Prevention is the Best Dog Ear Infection Remedy

Prevent dog ear problems by regularly using a dog ear cleaner. The best dog ear infection remedy is prevention; use a dog ear wash on a regular basis (make sure you dry ears thoroughly).

We have two dogs: Harley, a Rhodesian Ridgeback with longish, floppy ears, and Vega, a boxer/bulldog cross with short ears.

From time to time, both have had ear infections. But after the first infection for Harley (with her long ears and her love of rubbing her head in the grass - you could almost guess that she'd be first), we became much more proactive about prevention.

On our veterinarian's advice, we got a commerical dog ear wash and made sure that we checked our dogs' ears regularly and cleaned them regularly. We've now graduated to making our own dog ear washes and we've found that their dog ear problems have pretty much been eliminated.

Your Dog's Ears

Your dog’s ears are the perfect environment to grow bacteria and yeast, which can lead to serious infections. We use some good homemade dog ear cleaner recipes. Remember, if your dog already has an infection, it's important to have your vet take a look, and discuss treatment.

Dog Ear Cleaner Recipes

Recipe #1

Mix one part white vinegar with one part rubbing alcohol (50/50) in a squirt bottle and shake well. Using a clean cotton cloth or cotton ball, apply the dog ear cleaner to the cotton and gently wipe the inside of the ear.

Recipe #2

Mix 4 ounces of rubbing alcohol, 2 ounces of boric acid, and 1 Tbsp of glycerine, shake well.

If you notice that your dog’s ears are sensitive to the touch, or that the ears have a strong odor and/or a dark discharge, or any inflammation, these are symptoms of an ear infection. Your dog might also be shaking its head or trying to scratch its ears. If that's the case, get to your veterinarian as soon as possible and have the ears checked - they might need more than cleaning!

Your dog’s health and well being depends on you; bathe your dog regularly and ensure your pet is clean - for the dog and your household.
