Homemade Dog Shampoo

A Natural Dog Shampoo Recipe

Homemade dog shampoo is easy to make and uses less, or no chemicals. Use a dog shampoo recipe with natural and organic dog shampoo ingredients. A natural homemade flea shampoo is a good flea treatment and is gentle on the skin.

Bathing your dog is sometimes left until your pet’s smell gets to the point where something has to be done. Or until your dog comes inside from rolling around in the dirt or mud.

Washing your dog on a fairly regular schedule is important to keeping your dog healthy and your home hygienic. However, do be careful not to over-wash your dog; you can over-do it and dry out your dog’s skin.

Unfortunately, some store-bought shampoos contain various chemicals that can irritate your dog’s skin. Those shampoos are also not good to use if you have small children in the house and if the children play with your dog.

A great way to neutralize this problem of over-use of chemicals is to make your own homemade dog shampoo. Homemade dog shampoo not only contains all-natural ingredients and none of the chemicals that are often used in commercial products, but it is cheaper and very simple to make.

There any many different types of homemade dog shampoo, here are a few recipes. Review them and then choose the one that is best to use for your dog's skin type.

Dog Shampoo Recipe #1 (a natural-type product)

  • 1 cup liquid anti-bacterial soap;
  • 1 cup organic apple cider vinegar;
  • Approx 1 quart of water;
  • 1/3 cup glycerine - which can be found at drugstores and some grocery stores (check out the first aid supplies section).

Mix the soap, vinegar, and glycerine together. Then add the water slowly until you reach the desired consistency (like a thick gravy). Store in an old (and clean) shampoo bottle and you have got you own natural homemade dog shampoo.

Dog Shampoo Recipe #2 (Dry Skin)

  • 1 box of Cornstarch
  • 10 drops of Tea Tree oil
  • 1 ½ cups of Corn Meal

Mix all ingredients together. Note: you can use any essential oil in place of the tea tree oil (lemon oil, lavender oil, rosemary oil, etc). Apply the shampoo and leave it on your dog, if possible, for about 5minutes before rinsing off. Always rinse your dog well - otherwise, your dog's skin may be irritated.

Homemade Flea Shampoo - Smells Great too!

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 tbsp Peppermint oil
  • 2 tbsp Eucalyptus oil
  • 2 tbsp White cedar oil
  • 1/4 cup Citronella oil
  • 1/4 cup White vinegar or Apple cider vinegar

Mix all ingredients very well and store in an old and clean shampoo bottle. You should only use this homemade flea shampoo if you see fleas on your dog (while it's not full of chemicals, your dog's skin may be sensitive to over-use).

No Time to Make Your Own? Our Product Recommendation:

If you run out of time (or interest) in making your own dog shampoo, then we recommend buying a Native Remedies product called PetAlive BeFree Flea Shampoo. It is gentle and effective and encourages healthy skin and coats. It has a residual mosquito, flea and fly deterrent effect; and it does NOT contain parabens, sodium laurel sulphate or harmful petrochemicals that are found in some commercial shampoos.
